Salmon

My husband and I went salmon fishing in Lake MI and came back withour limit. He’s smoking most of them , but saved 2 for the grill! This should inspire me for week 2 of phase 1. My biggest problemtoday was getting up at 3:15 AM, made the day a lot longer and thetime between meals and snacks seemed to drag! But I stayed with thePhase 1 program.

Fruit juice

A main stream ( read…one that follows the government approved foodpyramid) dietitian, came out yesterday, saying that fruit juice wasa contributing factor to obesity in children. She said that many parents, believing it to be healthy, let theirchildren drink juice to quench their thirst instead of water.Worse still. are the fruit juice drinks. They are about 20% juice and the rest, sugar sweetened water.

Juicing

I would be interested in your thoughts on juicing. As I understand it, youare removing the fiber and that is what we get so little of on Atkins. So ineffect, you are concentrating your calories and removing fiber. That is why Ihave never used a juicer. Please explain and give recipes if you like whatyou make and think it wise to include in a low carb diet.

Mexican food on SB Diet

If you think that you can’t eat your favorite Mexican food because of the South Beach Diet - you’re wrong! Just a few modifications and you can say yes to eating Mexican food on any Phase on the diet.
Actually the main problem at many Mexican restaurants is that the food is in out-of-control portions and contains bad fats.
In fact you can eat all your favorite meals, just order the meats and vegetables you usually take on all types of entrees like fajitas or tacos. You can even eat whole-wheat tortilla. But if you are in Phase 1 - leave them off. Some restaurants today even offer special menu items like a low-carb burrito.
On Phase 2 you can freely use black beans as well as a salad with salsa for all Phases. Guacamole is also allowed because avocado is considered a “good fat”.
Order a dish of grilled chicken or fish. But make sure the chicken is without cheese on top because it’s certain to be full-fat. Grilled chicken in a very spicy sauce is also acceptable.
Forbidden Foods
- Tortilla chips, crunchy deep-fried corn.
- Sour cream.
- Refried beans. Although they may be protein-sources, they are usually cooked with animal fats and topped with full-fat cheese so they’re not good for you.
- Chimichangas and taco salad shells.

Cooking tips for SBD

For those who are on the South Beach Diet many low carb recipes are acceptable. The main modifications must be in the area of saturated fat - butter, cream, cheese, and fatty meat. Besides, some foods that are forbidden in the same quantities in some other low carb diets, are allows by the South Beach meal plan, for example, beans other than soybeans, and small amounts of whole grain foods.

Chinese, indian and Japanese food

Chinese food
The main problem of Chinese food is that the dishes contain less vegetables in favor of deep fried meats, for example, sweet and sour chicken. Besides the portions are often too large and contain rich sauces.
Avoid all fried meat dishes. Don’t eat white rice because it has high GI. Also exclude noodles as they are really bad-carb).
So, avoid sweet and sour chicken, fried rice, noodles, lo mein, egg rolls, crispy duck.
Chicken, broccoli, egg soup, steamed vegetables, rice, meat, poultry, shellfish are acceptable.
Indian food
Concerning Indian dishes you can get Tandoori style meat, which is mainly roasted. Salads, chickpeas, beans and other vegetables are good choice as well as masalas and raitas.
But avoid the traditional bread prepared in the Tandoori oven because a carb is a carb and bread bread even if it prepared in a healthy way.
Japanese food
Japanese food is good too because it includes fish, shellfish, and vegetables. You can also allow miso soup. But exclude sushi; eat sashimi instead because it does not include rice.
Some vegetarian options, such as - and edamame-based dishes are also acceptable. The marinade of Teriyaki dishes is high in sugar that makes them unfavorable for the South Beach Diet as well as tempura because it is fried deeply.

SB Diet and nicotine

In spite of that fact that nicotine is thought to raise metabolism, it’s poisonous harmful influence on metabolic enzymes is more important.
So definately those people who smoke won’t control their weight this way. And if there are any benefit that might come with smoking, they will be crossed by it’s destructive effects.
Actually smokers really gain weight when they quit, but this might also be caused by the fact that some have in fact a “hand-to-mouth” fixation that they later try to satisfy by eating. If you trying to give up smoking being on the South Beach Diet, this will not influence negatively your weight because on diet you can eat as much as you want.

SB Diet and caffeine

Although one of the main effects of caffeine is that it stimulates a leap of insulin but the latest studies indicated that people who use more coffee are less subject to diabetes. So, if you don’t exceed the limit of one cup a day, tea, coffee or caffeinated sugarfree sodas are accepted on the South Beach Diet. Use caffeine in moderation because:
- It has addictive influence on the brain and the kidneys.
- It possesses diuretic features, and is a dehydrating agent.
- Caffeine causes the pancreas to produce insulin, which can stimulate unhealthy cravings. That’s why it is forbidden during Phase 1. For the rest of the diet you can enjoy 1 morning cup and then use decaf.

Make Eating a Pleasure

Make Eating A Pleasure!

Conscious eating is such an important part of our
weight loss efforts. We should always be aware of
every bite we put in our mouth.

We all live in a rush, rush world. We wolf down
our food. We don’t make eating a pleasure.

Simple breakfast idea

One of the things I like is cottage cheese with cinnamon sprinkled
liberally on top. I have also tried some no sugar jelly, but there are a
few carbs in the jelly. Both are satisfying and quick to make; they are a
nice alternative if you are “egged” out and miss your dairy products.
