Glucosamine tabs… question about ingredients

One of the ingredients in the glucosamine tablets from Costco is dextrin.

Dextrin

The term dextrin describes a class of intermediate ingredients produced bytreating starches with heat, acid, or enzymes. Synonyms for dextrinsinclude starch gum, vegetable gum, and even tapioca.

Dextrin is used as a diluting agent for pills and capsules, as well as athickener in creams and foam stabilizer in beer. It can also be found inbaked goods, candy, gravies, pie fillings, poultry, puddings, and soups.FDA considers it Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) when used in amountssufficient for its purpose.

Are there any formulas without this kind of ingredient? Will this throw meout of ketosis and off plan to take 2 of these a day?

Perhaps a trip to a good HFS might be in order.Check out the ingredients on the brands that they stock.I’ve just gone to look at my bottle, but I’d put the tablets into aplain container.

I’ve just been to the HFS and the tabs do not have this addition.I was on the verge of purchasing them, but was also looking intopurchasing Bromelain. There is no need to use both. The only Bromelain that they had in the shop was in a powder formulathat also has glucosamine, amongst other ingredients.I purchased it, but on arriving home noticed that the firstingredient is maltodextrin.Right now, to be perfectly honest, I don’t care.It is more important to me to get over the injury. The pain is waking me in the middle of the night.I’ve just told DH that I can’t continue this way, that I need morerest, and that working is just too stressful for me (physically).

I am a member of the low carb exercise list that LyleMacDonald and friends started. They tell me that the glucosamine, which takes 3 months to really get into the tissues, keeps the jointshydrated.

Thank goodness, I have not had troubles with my knee lately, but I amtaking glucosmine in capsules with nothing else added.

    Thanks for looking into this!

Goodness gracious, woman. you need to heal that body of yours andfeel better.

Someone on the low carb exercise list (all scientific types) told methat chondroitin is for injuries and glucosamine is to keep thejoints from dehydrating, particularly on low carb regimes. Anotherreason to DRINK all your water, folks.

However, on the Runner’s World message board, they are talking thatyou just need glucosamine for injuries, particularly to the knee.

I have just started taking glucosamime. After three months, I willtell you if I feel any different. I mostly overused by knee on thetreadmill one night. It was two weeks before the marathon weekend andI rested it by walking instead of running, three times a week thatweek. It did not bother me until I stretched, so I may have stretchedtoo far. Your knee should never extend over your toe when youstretch. I iced it and took Advil liquid gels when needed and itturned out just fine and I was able to continue the next week. Youreally have to listen to the body.

One thing about weight training or aerobic activity, whether walkingor something else, it strengthens the muscles that support yourjoints and bones and you are less likely to injure your joints if youdo these activities.

I plan to do more weight training this coming year to protect myjoints as I get older.

My 15 year old arthritic cat takes glucosamine every day. It really seems tohelp him. I notice right away if I’ve run out of pills and not made it tothe pet store for a while.

What part of Oz do you live in?My dentist in Melbourne first told me about the Glucosamine. He had an arthritic dog that needed very expensive surgery. After lots of “searching” on the net it was suggested to him that hegive the dog the glucosamine. The dog got better. Now he and his wife take the tablets and he recommends them to allhis patients.

I have my dog on it, as well as SAM-e and vitamin B complex, per the Vet’sinstructions. He is also on Daramax (a doggie antiinflammatory). Vet also saidhe needed to go swimming. Funny, my husband just did not understand the dogneeding a pool LOL. 3 more weeks till Disney World!!!!!!! Shelly, maybe wewill get to meet there next year. Or, come to St. Louis and do the Spirit ofSt. Louis Half. I am not going to run it (promised the doc I would take abreak after Disney), but will be volunteering. (shameless plug-still acceptingdonations and thank you to those who have already donated).

I live in Newcastle. Where are you? I am on the LowCarbOz group too, but don’ttalk much.

I’ve been taking glucosamine myself off and on for a year now and it reallyhelps my joints. Funny it never occurred to me to give it to my poor old dog. I swear she has arthritis some days because she creeps around like I do on a badday. Pity they can’t talk, huh?

An FYI: if you are having joint pain, try taking MSM but make sure youbuy one with Vitamin C in it or take Vitamin C at the same time. The Chelps with MSM absorption. I have a cousin who is a journeyman linemanand has a very physical, demanding job. He was bothered by a lot ofjoint pain and started taking MSM at the recommendation of an herbalist. He said after just a few weeks of taking it that he was totally painfree and remains pain free to this day. He will never go without it. Ibought some for DH to take (stenosis of lower back, disc problems) andafter taking it 3 weeks he was swearing by it. My mother has very badknees and has had one knee reamed out and she started taking the MSM -she’s stopped taking her pain meds now and is more active. I googledfor some articles on it, but caveat lector - I haven’t read any ofthese in their entirety.

I LOVE scientific types…as long as they speak words you can understand. Honestly, that’s the problem I’m having with South Beach, is that I can’t findany of them. That kinda worries me. I had “met” some awesomely SMART people onAtkins….I loved that.
