Ot…nursing mothers and diet coke

The baby has been very unsettled.Does anyone think there could be a link between that and the factthat DIL is drinking Diet Coke?I told her to give it up….my exact words were,”why are youdrinking that crap”

Colic, perhaps? Baby not getting enough if he is nursing and he’s stillhungry?

My sister breastfed my niece and she was very colicky for about thefirst 3 months. I don’t think it has anything to do with thebreastfeeding, though.

I can tell you that with my experience while nursing my son, I noticed atremendous difference if I ate anything with chocolate and then nursed him. Hewas very cranky. He was normally a very quite, playful baby. I think there isa direct link between what you eat and how the baby reacts. Corn was anotherthing that affected his disposition.

Absolutely……..I nursed and researched it all before I did……twothings in the Diet Coke could be giving the baby problems…..caffeine andcarbonation. With nursing, it all depends on the mother and the baby…….youhaveto try different things to see what bothers the baby and whatdoesn’t…….some of the common problem foods are caffeine, carbonation, onions, garlic, peppers, brocolli, beans, chocolate, milk (uncommon, but it does happen), andmany many more….however, tell her NOT to eat any honey, as there isbotulism bacteria in it and as adults we have the enzyme to fight it off, butinfants (up to two, I think) don’t. Even with all of the concessions that Ihad tomake (including her busting my nipple open THREE times….talk aboutpainful!!) I still think it is soooooo worth it to breastfeed. Tell her goodluckand to stick with it!

Of course there is a link between what mother eats and what nursing babyeats….however the amount of caffeine that enters the milk is somethingthat is disputed. Some sources say a lot of it enters, while others maintainthat not much caffeine enters the breast milk. I would most definitelyadvise her to ask her pediatrician about it and take his/her word on thesubject.

Please be patient with your Dear DIL, who is a brand new mother. She isexhausted and doesn’t know much about the baby yet. How is nursing goingotherwise? The baby could be unsettled because he is figuring out how tonurse. It’s a lot of work to suck milk out of breasts :) Mom and son arejust getting acquainted….how cute.
